8 Habits That Can Stain Teeth

As usual, when it comes to your teeth, prevention is better than cure. The best way to keep your smile looking bright is to avoid consuming staining substances in the first place. And if you’ve just undergone bleaching teeth or thinking about looking at the future, avoid staining can help you get the most out of your treatment.

Knowing what causes yellow teeth and other types of discolouration are the first step.

1. Drinking coffee, red wine, and other teeth-staining beverages

Coffee is a well-known culprit for stained teeth. If you drink regularly and do not rinse your mouth with water after drinking it, a dark pigment called chromogens in coffee can stick to the surface of the tooth enamel, causing them to darken over time.

Carbonated soft drinks and sports drinks can cause tooth stains – it can have many acids, sugars, and pigments. Try to avoid these drinks altogether, or drink them in moderation.

4. Holding the food and drink in your mouth

The longer something related to your teeth, the more time you have left a stain on the back or acid to act on the enamel. Try not to store food or drinks in your mouth longer than necessary before swallowing. Consider using a straw for drinking – this helps to limit contact with the liquid front teeth.

5. Not drinking enough water

The recommended quantity of drinking water throughout the day is important for hydration, but it can also help remove stains by rinsing the staining substance left on the teeth. If you live in fluoridated areas, drinking tap water with fluoride can help protect your teeth against decay.

6. Smoking

There are many health reasons to quit smoking already, but tobacco is also a major cause of tooth stains, whether smoked or chewed. In addition to stains, smoking is a risk factor common to many oral health problems, including gum disease and oral cancer. The faster you can stop, the sooner your body can begin to recover.

7. Not brushing and flossing your teeth

Dental plaque that forms on the teeth’ surface tend to maintain a stain, and good oral hygiene helps reduce the buildup of plaque. Dentists recommend brushing twice a day, preferably using fluoride toothpaste, and floss at least once a day. And, of course, eating a healthy balanced diet without too much sugar can help too.

8. Not visiting the dentist

Regular check-ups with your dentist important cornerstone of the good oral care routine. Your dentist can examine your teeth and gums for early signs of problems and advise on how to help keep your teeth healthy.
