Are Dental Veneers Painful?

Today, we will discuss if having dental veneers are painful.

Hi, Dr James here, and I’m one of the principal dentists at Elevate Dental.

Yesterday, I was speaking with one of our patients, Kay, from Richmond. She had been interested in having dental veneers and she asked me, “Are having dental veneers actually painful?” It’s such a great question, so I thought I’ll make a short video sharing with you what I shared with her.

Dental veneers are thin shells of material that are bonded onto the external surface of the teeth. This can be done to fix problems such as discoloured teeth, uneven or irregularly shaped teeth, crooked or rotated teeth, gaps between teeth, or teeth that aren’t the right size, and these could be either being too square or too long for the patient’s face.

Dental veneers can be made from different materials. This can either be a tooth-coloured composite material, which is similar to what’s used for general dental fillings. These are completed in a single visit and can last quite a few years. However, they can lose their shine and discolour over time and therefore need replacing. The other option is a ceramic material. These can last for over 15 years and are extremely stain resistant. Ceramic also has amazing colour properties and they’re so life-like that they virtually cannot be distinguished from your natural teeth.

At Elevate Dental, we work with some of Melbourne’s leading master ceramicists who meticulously design and handcraft these veneers for an ideal smile to suit the shape of your face. The fitting and bonding of these ceramic veneers occur at a second visit.

The outer layer of teeth is called the enamel layer. This surface layer does not detect pain or sensitivity. When having dental veneers, the surface may need to be prepared or roughened slightly before the veneer can be bonded on. Veneers are very successful when they are bonded to this enamel layer. When designed and executed correctly, the process of having dental veneers means that because we’re mainly working in this outer layer, you can expect very minimal discomfort during the procedure.

I hope this video helps you to have a greater understanding of the dental veneers procedure. If you are considering upgrading your smile with dental veneers, we would love to look after you.
