Today, we’re going to discuss this popular question, how do we fix crooked teeth.
Hi, I’m Dr Judith, and I’m one of the principal dentists here at Elevate Dental. The other day, I was speaking with one of my patients, Joe from Cremorne, and he’s had crooked teeth all of his life and felt that now was the time to do something about it. He was curious about what his options were. So I thought I’d make a video to share my thoughts about this, just in case you are also thinking of the same thing.
In general, there are two ways to fix crooked teeth. Number one is by using orthodontic treatment. What that means is either by using braces or Invisalign, we move the teeth to where their ideal position is. The second way is using dental bonding and veneers. That’s usually where we can apply a material on the front surface of the teeth to make them look pretty.
Now, if you want to know a little bit more about what each procedure is then you can click the link below, and that will lead you to a more in-depth discussion of what each option is.
A very common question is, how do you choose between one or the other? It comes down to a combination of factors.
For example, do you have a time limit, a deadline by which you really need to have your teeth fixed? Usually anything that involves moving teeth will take longer than dental bonding and veneers. Invisalign can take anywhere between, on average, about three to nine months, sometimes longer, depending on how much we need to move the teeth. In comparison, a smile transformation with dental bonding and veneers can be done within one to two weeks.
A second consideration is: what do your current teeth look like and what do you want your final smile to be. For example, if you have really, really crooked teeth, then veneers may not be appropriate for the long-term health of those teeth. Alternatively, if it is mainly one tooth that is slightly out of place, then sometimes a veneer just on that one tooth may be enough to elevate your smile and make it one that you’ll be proud to show off.
