Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening Richmond

White teeth can take a smile up a notch, which is why this is one of the highest in-demand cosmetic dental procedures today. Our team here at Elevate Dental Richmond Melbourne know this and we are here to meet the demand, and with expertise and knowledge, we can find the best teeth whitening solution for your dental needs.

What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a treatment that uses ingredients like hydrogen peroxide to bleach teeth, leading to a whiter, cleaner smile. The process can be done either at home or in our office and which one you use will depend on your whitening goals. During an initial exam, our experienced dentist will inform you of the best shade of white for your teeth and then suggest a plan to help you get there.

Types of Teeth Discolouration

Teeth can become discoloured for a range of reasons, such as medications, staining from foods or trauma to the teeth. Not all types of discolouration can be fixed with a tooth whitening treatment, but a dental exam and evaluation will allow our team of professionals to determine if the procedure is right for you.

\

Extrinsic stains are those that form on the outside of the teeth. This type of staining is mostly due to foods and beverages like coffee, tea, red wine, grape juice and even curries. Other practices like smoking can cause teeth to stain, and quite often teeth discolor as we age. These are the most common discoloration issues that teeth whitening can solve.

\

Intrinsic stains form from the inside of teeth. These are often due to medications, tooth decay or trauma to the teeth. While the standard tooth whitening process will usually not work on these types of stains, there are other options for patients to whiten up their smile such as dental veneers or bonding.

How to Prepare for Teeth Whitening

While getting your teeth whitened is not the same as surgery, there are some simple things you can do to get the most from your procedure.

Z
If your brushing and flossing routine are irregular, try to be more consistent at least one week prior to the procedure with a focus on gently cleaning the gum line as well as your teeth
Z
Set aside the proper amount of time for your appointment or the time you will need at home
Z
Work with your dentist to choose the best shade; you want whiter teeth but teeth that are too white can be distracting and look unnatural
Z
Use desensitising toothpaste for a week before you begin the process
Z
Schedule a teeth cleaning treatment a week or two before you begin teeth whitening, for an extra boost of whitening

How it’s Done

Getting your teeth whitened can take place in our clinic or at home. We advise patients to be wary of certain over-the-counter whitening toothpaste and other products that can lead to damage of tooth enamel. When you use a dentist to oversee your teeth whitening, you will get the level of white you desire for the money spent, while lessening the risk of developing extreme tooth sensitivity and gum damage. We provide two options for our patients at Elevate Dental.

At Home Whitening is for those who prefer to take a slower approach to the teeth whitening process and it costs less than the in-office treatment. In this case you are given a tray that is customised to your teeth and a whitening solution, or gel, that is customised for your needs. At home, you will add the gel to the tray and place it over your teeth for 1-2 hours each night and from 7 to 14 days.

Most patients prefer the teeth whitening kit from a dentist instead of a standard store kit because the trays and gel are custom made for each individual. This ensures you get the strength you need for your desired colour without overdoing it, which can cause excess sensitivity. In addition, the custom-made trays will fit better, while standard trays may not fit properly, putting you at greater risk for pain and gum damage.

In Office Whitening is performed in one office visit and takes about 90 minutes. During the visit, a whitening gel of hydrogen peroxide will be applied to your teeth, and then we shine a blue light on your teeth to activate the gel. Your dental professional will ensure that your gums and lips are protected, reducing the risk of discomfort or gum burn.

This is a preferred option for many patients because of the instant results. But there are other advantages of in-office teeth whitening like safety, improved whitening, and longer-lasting results.

After Care

Once you get your teeth whitened, we understand you want your new colour to last. There are some things you can do to ensure your teeth stay beautifully white after your treatment:

Avoid foods and beverages that stain for at least one to two weeks after your whitening treatment is complete
Avoid smoking for one to two weeks after treatment
Brush at least twice each day with the toothpaste your dental professional recommends
Keep your teeth white with a take-home whitening treatment every 6 – 12 months

Whitening for Life Program

Teeth will naturally become darker over time, no matter what type of teeth whitening treatment you use. This is because foods will still stain, and smoking will continue to affect your teeth. At the same time, the aging process doesn’t take a break. For these reasons, we offer our patients a convenient and cost-effective way to maintain white teeth for life.

Our Whitening for Life Program includes a set price for at-home whitening. This is the best maintenance and prevention program for clients to keep their oral health in-tact and a beautiful smile in top shape with 6-month checkups and cleanings. Since teeth whitening is most effective after a professional teeth cleaning, we provide a whitening syringe for each 6-month checkup. And if you already had a professional whitening, and stick to your regular professional cleanings, you only have to wear the teeth whitening solution for two to three days for effective whitening.

Went this afternoon for an appointment after not having been to the dentist since god-knows-when. The team booked me in at a time that suited me, were really easy to deal with, the process was simple and I was in and out (with a filling and an x-ray) within my hour lunch break. Dr James was really good and they made me feel comfortable and relaxed (even when I panicked over the big anaesthetic needle). The cost was really reasonable and I am definitely going to recommend to everyone.
