Hi, I’m Dr Judith, and I’m one of the principal dentists here at Elevate Dental. Now, yesterday, I was speaking with one of my patients, Terry from Richmond, who had just broken up a large chunk of his molar tooth while eating granola. We were talking about his options and he asked how much a dental crown would cost. Now, this is a popular question. So that’s why I thought I’d make a video to share my thoughts.
The cost of a dental crown usually ranges from 1.5-2.5K. So what can impact the price?
Well, each crown is handcrafted to fit your mouth. From the moment the dentist prepares the tooth for the dental crown to the moment it’s glued in, every step needs to be done with precision and care in order for it to last a very, very long time. An experienced dentist will be able to make sure that this process is as comfortable and efficient as possible so that your time in the chair won’t be any longer than necessary. So the more experienced dentist will tend to charge more than a junior dentist.
The next thing that impacts the price is the choice of material for the dental crown. It is important to choose the right material to fit the way you bite and how the rest of your teeth look. Did you know that there are over fifteen different types of crown materials that we can choose from?
Now, once we’ve actually taken a digital 3D scan of the tooth after we’ve prepared it, we work with some of Melbourne’s leading master ceramicists to create your dental crown. The ceramicist will handmake your crown to fit your teeth and your bite. They’ll create a crown that not only looks beautiful and is strong, but will also fit perfectly on your tooth.
The thing is, when we’re talking about the process of dental crowns, a gap of a micro millimetre will actually affect how long a crown may last. You might not notice it in the first few years, but as the years go on, a poorly-fitting crown can cause problems such as decay because a micro millimetre gap between your tooth and your crown is like a highway for bacteria.
A lot of work actually goes into the creation of a dental crown that not only looks good, but functions well, and lasts a long time.
At the end of the day, we’re actually recreating what nature had already created in the enamel. And we’re looking to build something that will last many, many years.
We work with some of the best ceramists in Melbourne, which has an implant on the overall cost of the procedure.
Generally speaking, the more experienced and masterful the ceramicist is, the more in demand they will be, and naturally, they will charge more. Here at Elevate Dental, they are the calibre of ceramicists we partner with to make the dental crowns for our patients.
