What Is The Process Of Dental Crown?

Today we’re going to talk about the procedure for a dental crown.

Hi, my name is Dr James, and I’m one of the principal dentists here at Elevate Dental.

So yesterday I was speaking with one of our patients, Sandy from Cremone. She’s a longterm patient of ours, and we were talking about a dental crown for a tooth of hers that was very broken down and had chipped and fractured in a back molar. And she asked me, “So what’s the next step? What’s involved when it comes to making a dental crown?” So I thought I would actually make a video and share with you what I shared with her, because this is quite a common question that we get.

A dental crown, sometimes referred to as a dental cap, is often made of porcelain. This is tooth coloured and looks and feels exactly like a natural tooth. So with a porcelain tooth-coloured crown, typically there are two appointments.

The first appointment is where we prepare the tooth and we make sure that it is nice and healthy. We remove all the old filling, and any bacteria that may still be there to make sure everything is clean and perfect. Then, we take a 3D scan of that tooth. At the end of that first appointment, you’ll have a temporary crown, which will stay in place for about one to two weeks.

Now, the reason why you have a temporary crown is because we want to make sure your tooth is protected and is secured while we handcraft your dental crown. We want to make sure your lifestyle is not impacted and you can live your life normally while you wait.

It takes between one to two weeks to make a dental crown. During this time, we will handcraft each individual crown so that it fits not only to the teeth next door to the one that needs a crown but also to your bite. So it’s individually made for you, and that includes the size, the shape, even the colour. This ensures that the new dental crown fits seamlessly and perfectly, and is as comfortable, strong and natural-looking as a natural tooth.

Once your dental crown is made, you will come back for your second appointment. This is when we will remove the temporary crown, and then fit in the longer-lasting porcelain crown.

With both of these appointments, you can eat and drink straight away. You don’t need to wait for any period of time. So that is how a dental crown is made and fitted. It is a very simple and straight forward treatment with minimal downtime.

So if you have a cracked tooth, or your cavity is getting too big, and your tooth requires extra support, we would love to help. We are friendly, caring and compassionate. Why not give us a call at +61 3 9428 2424, send us a direct message on social media, or complete the enquiry form on our website at, and we will help you organise your appointment. We look forward to meeting you.
